Is Brown Sugar Vegan?
Surprisingly many sugars (including brown sugar) are actually not vegan. The reason that they are not vegan is because bone char (Animal bones) is used in the process of refining sugar and brown is one of them. It would likely be possible to get brown sugar that is vegan (Unrefined) but your typical white and brown sugar are not vegan.
Which also means that many of the products that contain refined sugar are not vegan, simply because of the bone char.
Here is a quote from ordinaryvegan.net "Bone char is used in many types of sugar including brown sugar and confectioner's sugar. ... Beet sugar is considered vegan because it's never processed with bone char. This bone char filter process is unacceptable to many vegans. Even if you're not vegan, you have reason to be concerned about refined sugars and bone char."
Vegan Sugar Alternatives
If you are looking for vegan sugar alternatives, coconut sugar is a good choice. Its quite similar to brown sugar. Coconut sugar looks like brown sugar and tastes pretty similar. Also coconut sugar still contains many minerals that are taken out of refined processed sugar for an added benefit and it doesn't cause high blood sugar spikes so easily. Also beet sugar is a choice for many vegans as it does not contain bone char.
You can also go for vegan sweeteners but me personally i don't consume sweeteners, for one i don't like the taste and two their have been studies linked to sweeteners aiding in the cause and worsening of alzheimer's.
If possible i recommend using sugary fruits to add sweetness when it comes to baking, like Medjool Dates. You can blend them into a creamy texture which can be used for baking and also adds an added soft stickiness if enough is used.
